History in Williamsburg.

russellevent    jerry herron williamsburg   Williamsburg

A Big Steve Black Show “Shout Out” to Coach Jerry Herron and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets for capturing the school’s first ever football regional championship with a nice 21-7 victory over a tough Hazard team last Friday night.  This was Jerry Herron’s first win over Hazard in five tries.  This also marked the third time in three years that these teams battled for the regional crown.  Williamsburg is just one win away from a trip to Bowling Green and a chance at a State Title.  They first must get past another tough team in Raceland, who defeated high scoring Pikeville 14-3.  Williamsburg will host this final four match up this Friday at 7:30pm.

History in Williamsburg II.

Another Big Steve Black Show “Shout Out” to Coach John Bland and the University of the Cumberlands Patriots on their victory over St. Ambrose this past Saturday 56-28.  The victory gives the Patriots an 11-0 record, the best in school history.  Patriots stay at home again this weekend as they take on 6th ranked Saint Francis University.  Game time is at 12 noon.  #HometilRome!!

Oklahoma_Sooners  bob stoops

With their 41-31 victory over Kansas St., University of Oklahoma Football Coach Bob Stoops claims victory number 158 as Sooner Coach, passing Barry Switzer for the most wins all-time in OU history.  Stoops is one of four coaches at Oklahoma with at least 100 wins as head coach.  Others include Barry Switzer (157), Bud Wilkinson (145) and Bennie Owen (122).  Oklahoma is the only school with four 100 win Coaches.

Monday Morning Quarterback for November 18th

For this week’s edition of Monday Morning Quarterback, the final results on my Mythical local high school football championships for 2013 are complete.

For the 2013 KHSAA football championships, I have decided to share my mythical high school football championships for the schools in the Tri-County area, along 25E (Cumberland Gap Parkway) and those counties that encompass what is recognized as the 13th region when it comes to other sports in this area. The winners will be recognized on my show and on this website. Here are this year’s winners!!

steveblackshowmyth

Mythical Tri-County Champion

This award goes to the school in the tri-county area (Knox, Laurel and Whitley Counties) that has the last football team to be eliminated from the playoffs or wins their class championship. Schools eligible for this award are Corbin, Knox Central, Lynn Camp, North Laurel, Whitley County and Williamsburg). South Laurel did not make the playoffs this year, so they are not eligible. Last year’s winners was The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (eliminated in the Regional Finals).  The 2013 winner of this Championship will also go to the Yellow Jackets of Williamsburg High School.  They will be battling Hazard for the Regional Title once again this Friday night at Williamsburg.  Williamsburg is the only Tri-County team left in the KHSAA Playoffs.

Mythical Champion of 25E

This award has gone on among some of my friends for several years now. This mythical championship goes to the school in the towns connected by the Cumberland Gap Parkway (25E) that is the last team to be eliminated from the playoffs or wins their class championship. Schools eligible for this award include Middlesboro, Bell County, Pineville, Knox Central, Lynn Camp and Corbin. Last year’s winner was Bell County (eliminated in the regional championship).  The 2013 Championship ends in a 4-way tie.  They are Bell County, Corbin, Middleboro and Pineville.  All four schoold were eliminated in the second round of this year’s KHSAA Playoffs.

Mythical 13th Region Champion

This award goes to the school in the 13th Region (Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel and Whitley Counties) that has the last football team to be eliminated from the playoffs or wins their class championship. Schools eligible for this award include Middlesboro, Pineville, Bell County, Harlan Independent, Harlan County, Jackson County, Clay County, North Laurel, Williamsburg, Whitley County, Lynn Camp and Knox Central. South Laurel did not make the playoffs this year, so they are not eligible. Last year’s winner was Harlan County (eliminated in the final four).  The 2013 Championship will also go to the Yellow Jackets of Williamsburg High School.  They are the last remaining school that represents the 13th Region left inthe KHSAA Playoffs.

Congrats to all of the Steve Black Show Mythical Champions for 2013.  We wish the best of luck to Williamsburg as they host Hazard in one of the KHSAA Class 1A Regional Finals this Friday night at 7:30pm in Williamsburg.

Yellow Jacket Head Coach Jerry Herron will be a guest on the show this Thursday night at 7pm to discuss their upcoming match up with Hazard.  You can listen live at 7pm EST just by going to www.blogtalkradio.com and searching for the Steve Black Show.

Have a great week!!

Monday Morning Quarterback for August 26 2013

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Steve Black Show’s Monday Morning Quarterback.

What a first weekend for high school football in the Tri-County area (Knox , Laurel, Whitley).  A special shout out to Steve Black Show frequent guest Les Dixon, Sports Editor of the Corbin Times Tribune, as source of information for this blog.  You can follow his twitter account at www.twittwer.com/@Theendzonett where you will get great updates from around the local area on game nights!!

les dixon times tribune

Here are the results from around the area this past weekend.

From the Pioneer Bowl at Knox Central

Powell Co. 48  Lynn Camp 16

Tough loss for Coach Phil Russell in his 2nd season as head coach.  Lynn Camp’s Tyler Reynolds scored 2 touchdowns in the loss.  Lynn Camp was hampered with player suspensions and key injuries, but Powell Co. looked really good in the win.

Knox Central 51  Louisville Atherton 7

scott russell

No hangover from the post Jeffrey Canady era from Coach Scott Russell’s Panthers as Freshman QB Casey Diamond made his debut for KC, going 4 or 9 passing with 3 touchdowns.  Senior RB Jonathan Gist filled the hole left by Canady very well with 190 yards rushing and 2 scores.  Junior Matthew Barger had 68 receiving yards with 2 scores of his own.   As for Casey Diamond, I have heard positive things from several people about his potential.  I know it is just one game, but this young man has a chance to grow and do some special things for the Panthers in the years to come.  Check out some of Casey’s highlights from Friday’s game courtesy of www.hudi.com.

Williamsburg 43  Halls (TN) 14

jerry herron williamsburg

No hangover from the Yellow Jackets tough 7-0 loss to Hazard in last years Regional Final as the offensive attack of QB Dalton Sizemore and WR’s Corey Shelton and Skylar Griffith picked up where they left off last year.  Sizemore had a monster night with 415 yards passing with 6 touchdowns (3 pass, 3 rush).  WR’s Shelton and Griffith combined for 358 of those passing yards and 3 scores.  Coach Jerry Herron must be happy with his team’s offensive performance.

North Laurel 48  Claiborne Co. (TN) 20

lakrey north laurel

Poised to build on last years first winning season since 2004, Coach Chris Larkey’s Jags were lead by Gabe Nelson with 128 rushing yards and 2 scores.  This will set the stage for our show’s game of the week this weekend as North and Williamsburg are set to clash at South Laurel this Saturday night.  If you are in the area, this is a MUST SEE contest!!!

Other Tri-County scores…

Corbin 14  Pulaski Southwestern 0 in the Ray Corell Bowl in Somerset.

Morristown West (TN) 42  Whitley Co. 13.  Austin Ysidro (Sid-Dro) with 14 rushes for 99 yards in the loss.

South Laurel had the weekend off.

Scores from outside of the Tri-County area.

Leslie Co.  26 Harlan Ind. 21.

Middlesboro 48  Grant Co. 7.

South Pittsburg (TN) 35  Bell Co. 20.

Paintsville 55  Pineville 32.

Harlan Co. 49  Madison Central 6 in the Roy Kidd Bowl.

On the schedule for this weekend.

Bellevue at Harlan Ind.

There you have it.  Another great start to the football season.  If you did not get the chance, check out The Steve Black Show’s Tri-County Football Preview show from August 22nd.  We had Coaches Jerry Herron (W’Burg), Chris Larkey (North) and Phil Russell (Lynn Camp) on the show, as well as Sports Editors Les Dixon (Corbin Times Tribune) and Tim Bransetter (Barbourville Mountain Advocate).  We had a few glitches, but we hope to fix those issues before our show on Thursday, August 29th at 7pm.  We will revisit the first weekend of local football, preview this weekend’s games and preview the upcoming local college football season, as we will focus on the Battle for the Brass Lantern with Head Coaches John Bland of the University of the Cumberlands and Tommy Reid of Union College.  There will be other guests representing Cumberlands and Union and we discuss this annual clash between college rivals.
