Monday Morning Quarterback for October 28th

Should all states have a “mercy rule” when it comes to athletic events?

You may or may not have heard, but a high school football coach in Texas was accused of “bullying” from a parent of a player on the opposing team after Aledo High School beat Fort Worth Western Hills 91-0 in a game played earlier in October.

Under Texas law, accusations of bullying of any kind have to be investigated.  The Aledo coaching staff was cleared of all charges of bullying by the school district a few days later.

In fact, the head coach of Aledo, Tim Buchanan, himself had asked the officials several times during the game if there could be a running clock to speed up the game.

Unlike many states, Texas does not have a mercy rule when it comes to athletic events.  You can read more about this situation here.

The state of Kentucky has a mercy rule for football in which if a team is winning by a margin of 45 or more points in the second half, the game clock will continue to run to speed up the game.  I witnessed the rule in action this past Friday night with Williamsburg and Lynn Camp (final 53-0).

Here is my question again….

Should all states have a “mercy rule” when it comes to athletic events?  What are your thoughts on this subject?  Feel free to leave your comments here….

Have a good week!!

Monday Morning Quarterback for July 15th, 2013

Monday Morning Quarterback is a term used by many, so this is not an original title, but I am going to use it anyway for the title of my weekly sports happenings blog of the past week in sports.

Major League Baseball has entered it’s “Unofficial” half way point of the season with its All-Star Break.  This year’s All Star Game will take place at Citi Field in New York City, home of the New York Mets.  The winning team’s league will get home filed advantage during the World Series in October.

If the season ended today, here would be the playoff teams from each League:

AL East Champ      Boston

AL Central Champ  Detroit

AL West Champ     Oakland

AL Wild Card          Tampa Bay and Texas

NL East Champ      Atlanta

NL Central Champ  St. Louis

NL West Champ     Arizona

NL Wild Card          Pittsburgh and Cincinnati

Of course, anything can happen in the final two and half months of the season.  Atlanta has the largest lead of any of the Division leaders with a 6 game lead over Washington.  Many other teams out there have the chance to get to the post season.  It should be great to watch as the regular season nears its end!!

Back on March 30th, I had my MLB Preview of the Steve Black Show with Matt Mahony, Scott Cummings and Donney Jackson.  Check out the broadcast and see how their playoff picks are stacking up so far.

Good Monday to you all!!!

For the NCAA elite programs, its all about the Dollar

How would your business like to have a revenue of $163 million? If you want to know what that feels like ask someone in the University of Texas athletic department. USA Today released the list of top school revenue athletic programs and the Longhorns were #1.

Not to be out done, the SEC had 5 programs in the top 10 with: Auburn, LSU, Texas A & M, Florida, and Alabama. Speaking of Alabama, they need the money since they spent nearly a million dollars on food alone for the national title game. You can  read more about the cost of winning a national title in style by clicking the Yahoo article below.

If your wondering about Kentucky? They were ranked #18, 1 spot ahead of Louisville, which isn’t bad for a basketball school. #BBN
