Champions of Character.

As a public address announcer for the Union College Bulldogs, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), I read a statement before every ballgame that is a pledge that everyone involved in the contest (athletics, coaches, officials and spectators), will abide by to promote an environment of sportsmanship during that said contest.  It is called Champions of Character.

The Champions of Character program helps participants find the balance by keeping five core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership – at the heart of the athletics experience.

Recently, the NAIA started a program to recognize it athletics who exhibited those character traits during competition.  Schools would nominate athletes who they felt was deserving of the award.  Those winners will be recognized this Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo.

Two of those winners attend the University of the Cumberlands.  They are Cross Country runners Darcy Mascotti and Danielle Hoop.  Here is their story courtesy of the UC Patriots athletic website.

We tend to focus on sports figures that show negative character either on or off the playing field, but it is nice to read about those athletes with positive values too.  Congratulations to Darcy and Danielle on their upcoming award.

Now when I read that statement at Union games, I will think of the character of Darcy and Danielle.

Have a good week.
