Monday Morning Quarterback for July 29th, 2013

Welcome to the 7-29-13 edition the Steve Black Show’s version of Monday Morning Quarterback.  Now on to some highlights from last week.

NFL training camp’s injury fest!!

National Football League teams are officially getting ready for the new season and the season is already over for some players.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin tore his right ACL during Saturday’s practice and likely will miss the season. Maclin went down at the end of a non-contact drill and appeared to be in pain while he was on the ground for several minutes. He was helped onto the cart and needed assistance getting off it and going into the team’s practice facility.

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta fractured and dislocated his hip during a drill on Saturday.  Pitta’s injury occurred during the third day of training camp, when Pitta collided with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone vying for a pass from Joe Flacco.

And Denver Broncos center Dan Koppen is out for the season after tearing his left ACL on Sunday in 9-on-7 drills, less than six weeks after rejoining Denver following J.D. Walton’s setback in his comeback from ankle surgery.

All I want to know is WHO’s NEXT??  Yikes!!!!

USA National Men’s Soccer Team wins the 2013 Gold Cup

USAs Brek Shea scored 42 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute, and his goal in the 69th minute gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. It is the fifth Gold Cup title for the U.S., but its first since 2007. The victory also extended the Americans’ winning streak to a record 11 games, four more than their previous best.

Can the Americans ride their success into next year’s World Cup in Brazil?  We will have to wait and see.

Ryan Newman wins the Brickyard 400

Like many Indiana kids, Ryan revered Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the track he first visited in 1986 and later accidentally stumbled upon NASCAR’s inaugural 1992 test while out buying tires with his mother.  And like many racing fans from Indiana, like Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon, Ryan longed for a victory at one of the world’s most famous race tracks.

Stewart has one to his name and Gordon has collected four of his own, but on Sunday Newman made the boyhood dream a cool reality, taking the checkered flag at Indy to end a 49-race winless streak in front of his home state fans. His parents, who fueled his love of racing and took him to the 500 as a kid, joined him for his biggest win in Indiana.

That’s it for this week’s Monday Morning Quarterback.  What will this week in sports have in store?

How many versions of uniforms can we have?

oregon football uniforms

New uniforms have become a pop culture spectacle for college football. From futuristic to retro looks, these uniforms typically make a once a year appearance and are intended to generate fan excitement due to the uniqueness. The jerseys are then typically auctioned off to support either the college’s scholarship program or a charity. However, someone schools go for a entirely new identify through re-branding their logos and designs for the entire athletic department.

The reception of these uniforms is both hit and miss. Just ask Oregon, which usually has a completely new uniform design from shoes to helmet each game thanks to alumnus Phil Knight, Nike founder. But let’s look at a few other examples.

Black-Kentucky-Football-Uniforms kentucky grey uniforms

Kentucky in black uniforms…. horrible. Not one of their major colors. It’s kinda like the nerdy kid at school trying to look like an athlete just by wearing a jersey. Kentucky in the grey uniforms this year will look a lot better. The grey color is one of their traditional accent colors, plus the grey looks like a shade of coal dust.

NCAA Football: Miami at Maryland

Maryland tried to display their identity with a uniform similar to the state flag. It was a disaster.

army football uniform

Army though is one of only a few teams that could pull this off. Camo uniforms clearly state their identity and look tough as nails.

michigan uniforms

Michigan with a big M on the front…very cool. Classic and simple, a good mix of old school and new school.

For more uniform updates from across the nation check out the following Nike website:

What are your thoughts? Are you in favor or traditional uniforms or do you enjoy change? Let us know in the comments section.

Lefty wins his 5th Major!!

Lefty 2013 title

Phil Mickelson, 5 strokes behind going into Sunday, shot a 66 in his final round (his best round ever on a Sunday of a Major), to take the 2013 British Open title with a score of 281 (-3), beating Henrik Stenson, who finished 3 shots behind at even par 284.  This is Lefty’s 5th Major title to go along with his 3 Master’s titles and a PGA title.  Mickelson shines as he finishes of the round with 4 birdies over the final six holes, while contenders such as 3rd round leader, Lee Westwood, Adam Scott and Tiger Woods all faltered on Sunday.

It was the 43rd win of Mickelson’s PGA Tour career. As for Tiger Woods, he has now gone 17 majors without a victory.

Woods is still stuck at 14 major titles, four behind all-time leader Jack Nicklaus who owns 18 major titles.

Ed O’Bannon is messing with your video games!

ea ncaa football video game

The NCAA recently announced it is cutting ties with EA sports, the creator of NCAA Football and NCAA Basketball video games.  Very much like Madden, it’s the same video game every year. You pay $70 for the 2012 changed to 2013 and then pay another $70 the following year to have the box that says 2014.

The only other thing that changes are the players. Players that O’Bannon says should be compensated for their appearance on the game. O’Bannon played for the 1995 UCLA Bruins basketball team which won the national title. He was a great college player!!

A judge has agreed to hear his case and make a ruling, though the affects are already being made.  Without the official licenses from the NCAA then EA is sure to not produce as much profit. This case could have a big effect on merchandise sales. Only time and a judge’s ruling will tell.

Corbin’s new girls head basketball coach is…

Corbin Hounds
Corbin’s new girls head basketball coach is…Jason McDaniel! He is the former assistant basketball coach for the Corbin boy’s team. Coach McDaniel has helped build the boy’s program into a consistent regional contender, including three appearances in the State Sweet 16 tournament. He replaces Jennifer Parsons, who resigned to accept the Principal position at Corbin Middle School. Parsons had been head coach of the girl’s basketball program for over 10 years. She guided the Lady Redhounds to a region championship and appearance in the girl’s State Sweet 16 last season.

Monday Morning Quarterback for July 15th, 2013

Monday Morning Quarterback is a term used by many, so this is not an original title, but I am going to use it anyway for the title of my weekly sports happenings blog of the past week in sports.

Major League Baseball has entered it’s “Unofficial” half way point of the season with its All-Star Break.  This year’s All Star Game will take place at Citi Field in New York City, home of the New York Mets.  The winning team’s league will get home filed advantage during the World Series in October.

Major League Baseball Logo

If the season ended today, here would be the playoff teams from each League:

AL East Champ      Boston

AL Central Champ  Detroit

AL West Champ     Oakland

AL Wild Card          Tampa Bay and Texas

NL East Champ      Atlanta

NL Central Champ  St. Louis

NL West Champ     Arizona

NL Wild Card          Pittsburgh and Cincinnati

Of course, anything can happen in the final two and half months of the season.  Atlanta has the largest lead of any of the Division leaders with a 6 game lead over Washington.  Many other teams out there have the chance to get to the post season.  It should be great to watch as the regular season nears its end!!

Back on March 30th, I had my MLB Preview of the Steve Black Show with Matt Mahony, Scott Cummings and Donney Jackson.  Check out the broadcast and see how their playoff picks are stacking up so far.

Good Monday to you all!!!

The KHSAA dead period is officially over.

khsaa dead period

The KHSAA dead period is officially over. The dead period allows student athletes and coaches alike time away from the field to spend time with their families and focus on other interests. More specifically, no practices or coaching can occur during this time.

Now practices and coaching may resume. Now is the time scouting, scrimmages, camps, and observations are made. For football teams, now is the time to prepare yourself if you want to play in November. For cross country, now is the time to set goals to qualify for region and state meets. For soccer and volleyball, now is the time to come together as a team so you can advance in October.

Anyone else excited?!?!?

Season 2 is just around the corner!!

I hope that everyone has been having a great Summer.  It’s July now and of course, football season is just around the corner. And if that is the case, then it must be time for the second season of the Steve Black Show.  We have been working hard this Summer to get ready for the show and we are VERY excited to get started again.  Be sure to catch our first show of the season which is scheduled for Thursday evening, August 22nd, at 7pm.  We have a new day, a new time and we are expanding the show to 1 hour *Thanks to our great Corporate Partners”!!!!!  Check out our website as we will soon be releasing more details of Season 2 (Guest Lists, Special Series and Tri-County Rankings).

A Similar Path? Brad Stevens and Rick Pitino

The Celtics have been down this path before. In the mid 1990s the franchise hired former Kentucky coach Rick Pitino, fresh off back to back NCAA national title game appearances, winning one in 1996.

Brad Stevens was born in Indianapolis. His only coaching experience has been as assistant and head coach of the Butler Bulldogs. His Mother was even a professor at Butler. He helped this mid-major make back-to- back NCAA national title game appearances.  Why leave?

Now he faces the challenge is winning a NBA championship for a franchise that already has 17 NBA championships in their trophy case.  It’s a difficult task, just ask Pitino. Gone are late night curfews, team violations result in fines instead of team dismissals, and practice….to quote Allen Iverson “we’re sitting here talking about practice, not a game.”

Best of Luck Brad!
